Fionúir: Rules and rights, ... where ... why ... ?

When, Where, How, What, Why ... ?????

Some historians  (people who study history) say that Achaemenid Persian Empire of ancient Iran (Southwest Asia) came up with some relishing rules in the 6th century BC (before Christ)!

After winning Babylon (close to Baghdad in Iraq) in 539 BC, King Cyrus wrote the Cyrus Cylinder (ancient Persian clay cylinder)!

This is said to be the first human rights document ...! It is now in the British Museum, London and a copy of this object is to be found in the United Nations Headquarters, New York. Mr Shillitoe, maybe we can check this out online, please? It might be interesting to do in class!

The question is how have human rights developed.

Many people believe that rights are a result of natural law, for instance religious views. Whereas others are of the opinion that rights have developed over the centuries, for instance evolution.

What are human rights?

Human rights are a type of rule setting. Writing down rules and obey them.

We all accept rules from authorities. Sometimes we do not have a choice! We do this for many reasons, good and bad!

For safety (protect families, friends, colleagues :=))
For money (salary, bonuses, bribes ;=( )
For an easy life (hear nothing, see nothing, say nothing …
             (The Three Monkeys) ;=(

A good example would be rules of the road as it saves many lives. If we didn’t have them, thousands of people would die!

A negative example would be a regime (The French word for rules). There are many nasty regimes all over the world, for example Gaddafi in Libya (North Africa). If people don’t agree with the regime, then they might be sent to prison, tortured and even killed. This is taking away the freedom of speech, which is an important right.

There are also “soft regimes”! There are many examples in our every day lives, e.g. employees might not say what they think because if they do, they are afraid that the boss might fire them! This is a type of control and it keeps the wrong people in power usually for very bad reasons.

Thank you for reading.

Cheers Fionúir

Concept keys

In groups, we discussed the following concepts:
Causation- Why is a right like it is?
Responsibility- What is our responsibility?
Perspective- What are the points of view?

Following this,  using our shared understanding we created a set of rights guided by the key concepts.

My Diary Entry for Japan-Daphne

1/4/2011
Dear Diary,
today was the worst day of my life because there was a huge tsunami and earthquake were I live.I lost my family(mom,dad,2 sisters, and 3 brothers.)My house was torn down and one of my best friends died. You know what I had a stressfull day or really a bad week. I am hoping everything works out for all of Japan at the end . My dog nichu is still with me so I am a little bit safer with him. This is the most horrible thing in my whole life (I am 12 years old.) I wish this terrible war between land and water gets to it's end.

19/4/2011
Dear Diary, it has now been 18 days away from when the tsunami happened. Everything is back to normal and everything is getting built back together

Rights, Rules and Responsibilities: HOW would you feel if... isabel

Rights, Rules and Responsibilities: HOW would you feel if... isabel: "I think everybody knows what happend in Japan right.OK, here are a few questions and it would be nice if you would answer them: ..."

1. As a kid in today´s North of Japan I would feel very sad and alone.
I wouldn´t have much to eat nor would I have fresh and clean water.

I would be homeless.

2. If I were separated from my family, I´d probably cry and feel very homesick.
I´d be sorry for the members of my family left behind.

I´d pray for them.
They do all this hard work in order to reconstruct the distroyed areas of my country.

3. If I were living in Japan today, I would think of all the other countries in the world that are so happy. They haven´t experienced nuclear disasters in the past.

Children pray for a healthy environment.

Very thoughtful questions, Isabel.

Best wishes,

Ariane

each right

Everybody even if you are like fat or thin or tall or small. If you have dark skin you are not not allowed to get food. Or when you have white skin you are allowed to steel...IT WOULD JUST BE UNFAIR.I mean would you like it if you are small, and someone hits you just because tall.Hopfully not.

Fionúir: My new diary entry

My new diary entry

                                                                                                22 Dream Hill
                                                                                                Happy Land
                                                                                                1 April 2012

Dear Diary

How are things with you? I hope you are doing OK!

I am writing to let you know that I am now at school. In the meantime I am in Grade 1. Hooray, hooray :=)))

I have made lots of new friends. And on top of that I actually want to tell you that I learn a lot every single day.

Multiplication, addition, reading, writing and the highlight is that we have a science teacher who is called Mr Laboratory! Isn’t that funny!

I absolutely  adore the school routine in the morning. Having a delicious, warm breakfast, then washing my sleepy face with refreshing water, putting on my school uniform, which are navy blue trousers, a white shirt, a sleeveless navy blue top and black shoes. We look really smart in it and nobody can laugh about our clothes as we all wear the same! The school uniform is provided for by the school so this is a great privilege.

Our school is called : INTERNATIONAL SAVVY SCHOOL! And it has got 26 classes and in each class there are 22 pupils. Our subjects are: English, German, Maths, Spanish, Science and Unit Time. My best friends in class are Tom, Danny (my brother!) and Leon. I feel proud of my honest, reliable, funny, talkative, warm-hearted and gentle friends.

Oh, I forgot to tell you something really important … My family adopted me and they have one son. His name is Danny and he is the same age as I am! We like each other very, very much.

My dream is to have a good education and fantastic grades and my dream job is to be a journalist (foreign correspondent) travelling and writing about the most exciting and interesting events all over the world, e.g. what is happening now in Japan.

I feel as if I have started a brand, new life! With clean clothes to wear, fresh fruits to nibble on, and the best of all a lovely, loving, funny, family.

I am privileged to have all these wonderful things that money can’t buy!!!

What more does a young boy want!

Talk to you soon, Diary.

Best wishes
Issam

Rights

What do you think is the biggest right for kids?

Lino-rules of the road for Fahrradtraining

look at this for Fahrradtraining (it's good preparation)
Beginn einer Fahrradstraße
i'm looking forward to thursday!!!

because...

You have the right of an:

  • opinion

  • freedom

  • food

  • family

  • education

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO SAY YOUR OPINION BECAUSE...

If you could not say your opinion, you would not be happy with the things that happen. And maybe it would be like befor a long time.If you would not say the right thing youl die.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT OF FREEDOM BECAUSE...

With freedom you can say your opinion, you can have food, you can have a family and you can get education. With freedom you have rights. And that is good in Germany.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO GET FOOD BECAUSE...

You just need food for your life.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE A FAMILY BECAUSE...

If something happens a family is staying toghether. And I do not want to be alone when there is a Earthbrake or a Tsunami.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO GET EDUCATION BECAUSE...

If you want to get good education you have the right. And also because later when you are big get a good job.

Rights for kids

Here are the most important rights for kids: http://www.richtig-wichtig.org/

my diamond ranking

If I would be in Japan this would be my dimond ranking

family
future health
life food education
freedom help
play

How would be yours?

A right is...

A right is:

A right is something you are allowed to do.

A rule is:

A is something you are not allowed to break.

A story...

Once there lived a little boy his name was milo.He had no family. He worked somewere were he looked for gold.He worked day and night and in a week he got an apple. Then one day a king to were milo worked. He saw the adults work that was OK for him but then he saw all these small children work.THAT WAS TO MUCH! He said everybody should come and they did.He said:I
don`t want to see children work.So here is a right: children do not have to work. And from that
day on milo did not have to work again.(just as an adult)
And that is my way I think the first right was made.

WE have the right....isabel

WE have the right to be protected,
WE have the right to be respected.
WE have the right to be fat and small,
WE have the right to be thin and tall.
AND the biggest right we have sofar:
WE can be the way we are!

HOW would you feel if... isabel

I think everybody knows what happend in Japan right.OK, here are a few questions and it would be nice if you would answer them:

  1. How would you feel if you would be a kid in Japan?
  2. How would you feel if would be in Germany and some members of your family are there and you don't know if something happend to them.
  3. How would you feel if you would be in Japan and you do not have sonething to eat.

Big Writing

To write a diary entry from the perspective of the child portrayed in this film.

Using a short animation as a prompt we used a visible thinking strategy practiced as homework last week.

I see…
I think…
I wonder…

The following was created as a rubric to assess our writing

1. Dear Diary, including date.
2. Written in first person, I form
3. Express feelings about the situation.
4. Express secrets and wishes/dream
5. Asking questions

Extension:
Let's imagine this child gets the right to go to school,  sometime in the future.
Write a new diary entry

Daphne-Rights

The reason we have  rights are because if we did not have rights we would not have the right to be free, have a healthy family, have fresh and clean water,to go to school ,go to work  and so on. The point is that we all need rights to live pretty much. My group (Clara,Hermine, and,Ariane )thought that Family was first and most important because if we were not aloud to have a family  after the people who said no more families they would be also the last and most likely they would be probably the only family left on the planet Earth.

Note for parents

Following a class vote, the class decided unanimously that they would like a new unit blog.

We discussed the following points:
1. It is another form of dialogue about the unit- to share ideas, hold a conversation and comment on each other's postings.
2. The benefit of using and applying ICT skills for the 21st Century child
3. It is optional to use the blog but a wonderful opportunity
4.  Focus on the process of inquiry rather than content
5. Parents can also leave a comment or idea
6. MOST IMPORTANTLY- it is enjoyable
7.  As a starting point, use the resources suggested:

The Rights of the Child in Child-Friendly Language:

If You Could Wear My Sneakers! (book of poems commissioned by Unicef on Children’s Rights):
Watch a few of her poems in action:
Transcript of one of the poems:
Where to buy the book:

This reading pack could also be a great extension for homework:

A bingo game for families:

Our Questions

1. Who invented rights?
2. Who had the idea that we should have rights?
3. Why do we need rights because I know why we need rules? ( without rules there would be chaos)
4. In which time period were rights made, have they changed eg Roman times?
5. How many people first listened to the rights?
6. How many rights are there?
7. Who makes the rights and decides which are important?

Our Ideas

What is a right?
  • rights protect children
  • having an opinion
  • something your allowed
Why do we have rights?
  • someone makes the rights eg UNICEF- a world group of people who help others to have rights
  • to protect
  • some people don't have the rights they deserve eg a home
  • so we don't get mishandled

Consensus Board

In groups we answered these questions:
  • What is a right?
  • Why do we have rights?
  • What rights do we have?
Following this we came to a consensus of opinions and shared with the class.

(The K part of a KWL ie What I know)

We now have some questions
